Åke Hultkrantz was born on 1 April 1920 in Kalmar, Sweden. An anthropologist, he is known for his work on Native American religions and shamanism. A graduate of the University of Stockholm, he went on to become Senior Lecturer of Comparative Religion, Director of the Institute of Comparative Religion, and Professor Emeritus in 1986. He contacted the Saami in 1944 and 1946 and lived and researched among the Arapaho, Native American tribes in California, and the Shoshone, who adopted him as a member.
Visiting Professor at Brandeis University, UC Santa Barbara, and the universities of Montana, Budapest, Vienna, and Aberdeen, among others, Hultkrantz’s work and research became widely known. He attended the International Congress of Americanists, the Association of the History of Religion, and was President of the International Society for Shamanistic Research in 1993. Important works include The Religions of North American Indians (1979), Belief and Worship in Native North America (1981), Shamanic Healing and Ritual Drama (1992), Soul and Native Americans (1997), and The Attraction of Peyote (1997).
